No to boycotts !

Several people have asked me about my opinion about the 10th Tehran International Poster Biennial 2009, which has become an object of controversy among graphic designers within and outside of Iran.

A call to boycott the Biennial has been published in Facebook. The international graphic designers association AGI has published a carefully worded news item, signed by Ralph Schraivogel, whose intent supports a boycott. The restrained language is understandable as AGI would probably not want to obstruct an event presided by another AGI member, Ghobad Shiva.

The proponents of a boycott argue that a participation in the Biennial, either by sending a poster or as a jury member, would be a support of the Iranian Governement and it's suppression of the demonstrations after the elections of June 12, 2009.

The organizers of the Biennial have responded that "no governmental system has interference in these biennial unless they violate Islamic rules". Graphic designer Alain Le Quernec has explained in an interview in the french graphic design magazine "etapes" that the boycott is not directed against the iranian governement but against the change in responsability for the organisation of the Biennial.

The control over the 10. Biennial is a complex issue, involving a power struggle between two different iranian graphic design associations and other institutions, but also including questions about the role of graphic design and it's history in Iran, financial support, personality conflicts, religious and political considerations, fear of repression, pride, expectations for fairness and recognition, confusion, hurt feelings, idealism and probably more factors that remain hidden to an outsider. To reduce the situation to the simplistic formula "boycott the Biennial to support the iranian freedom fighters" is clearly wrong, in my opinion.

How the iranian graphic designers deal with their governement, or the graphic design organisations claiming to represent them, is best left to them to decide. But if graphic designers outside Iran now boycott the Biennial and break off communication, the lifetime achievment of the great Morteza Momayez and his colleagues to make iranian graphic design an equal and respected member of the international community is in shambles.

Morteza Momayez was well aware of the necessity of international contacts. At the start of his campaign to open iranian graphic design to the world, he wrote, in 2001:

"Daily routine designing, lack of access to the latest international sources of reference and absence of the possibilities for a person-to-person exchange of ideas with counterparts world-wide, is gradually distancing iranian graphic designers from novel ideas. Naturally, continuation of such circumstance will have negative consequences, affecting this field of art at all levels from its schools to the work environment alike."

I am therefore convinced that the memory of Morteza Momayez is better served by keeping his spirit alive rather than seeking confrontation, and I do not support a boycott of the 10th Tehran International Poster Biennial 2009.

I wish I could spend my time writing about posters rather than poster politics, and hope to remain on speaking terms with all involved, in particular the iranian graphic designers, the largest group of readers of Posterpage. I also think that we are better off "concentrating on what unites us, and not on what divides us", as I have said in my recent speech at the Tehran Contemporary Museum of Art.

Copyright problems in Chaumont

The poster collection at Les Silos in Chaumont, France, has grown over the last 20 years from the annual poster competitions of the Chaumont International Poster and Graphic Design Festival, by about 2000 posters per year. When the city decided some time ago to make the collection public through an internet poster database, they soon found out that they had to obtain the permission of all the poster designers to publish the pictures, or risk copyright problems. They then realized that this was very time consuming, i.e. expensive, and drafted a standard contract that they planned to send to everybody who had ever participated in a Chaumont competition, asking to hand over the copyrights in exchange for the privilege to be shown in all future Chaumont publications.

Not unexpectedly, this caused an outcry of protest, and 3400 graphic designers signed a petition to the city of Chaumont to reconsider these plans. A meeting took place in Chaumont on March 23, 2009, between 13 lawyers, politicians, administrators, copyright specialists and 3 graphic designers (Alain Le Quernec, Francois Caspar and Jean Paul Bachollet) to resolve the problem.

I am not sure of the outcome, but find it sad that you now need a lawyer to read the fine print in a Call for entries to defend your interests. I also need a lawyer to advise me if the winning posters of the Chaumont competition can be shown on Posterpage with a resolution of more than 300 pixels.

Current copyright legislation, if it is enforced to the letter, will seriously damage poster competitions, exhibitions, publications, web sites, poster research, documentation and the free exchange of ideas. The absurd court case of the Associated Press vs. Shepard Fairey about his Obama poster is just an example. Copyrights will not make the poster designers rich however, as many are made to believe, because every publisher will avoid those designers or their descendants that make life difficult for him. When was the last time you saw a Roman Cieslewicz poster?

Also, the tide may be turning, and a designer has to pay for his posters to be shown, instead of receiving copyright compensation. It has already turned in the art business. Ask any painter (except Picasso etc.) how much he has to pay his gallery, and how much he receives from the copyright institutions.

There will be a discussion of copyright questions at the opening weekend of the Chaumont Festival, on Sunday, May 17, 2009 at 10:00 at the Theatre le Nouveau Relax, 15 bis Rue Levy Alphandery, F-52000 Chaumont.

Krzysztof Dydo, the well know polish poster collector, dealer, author and exhibition organizer has an eye for new talents, and also supports the young designers by giving them comissions for posters for his Galeria Plakatu in the center of Cracow, Poland. He writes "My last posters were made almost exclusively by young students of Roman Kalarus, also this one by Aleksandra Naparlo "Ksana" from Katowice."

Kalarus, a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, is a master of erotic posters and art, but also a close collaborator of the Archdiocesan Museum in Katowice, and has painted sacred pictures in several polish churches. He too was one of the artists discovered and pushed by Dydo.

I'm glad Roman Kalarus has obviously communicated his joy of life so well to his students and am looking forward to see more of their work. The lady in the picture is one of Krzysztof's customers looking for posters in his shop (I think).

The new russian book "Moscow Conceptual Posters from the 1990's" will be presented at the cultural center "Dom" on December 28 at 1900. It is a catalogue of an exhibition at the State Tretiakov Gallery, and includes posters by Iurii Bokser, Aleksandr Chantsev, Erik Belousov, Igor Gulitov, Anna Naumova, Boris Trofimov, Evgenii Dobrovinskii, Erken Kagarov, Elena Kitaeva, Andrei Logvin, Vladimir Chaika and many others. Book design is by Iurii Surkov, with texts by Sergei Serov.

The cultural center "Dom" is on Bolshoi Ovchinnikovskii Pereulok 24, Stroenie 4, next to Novokuznetskaia metro station.

St. Moritz posters in St. Moritz

The swiss mountain resort St.Moritz has just opened the "St. Moritz Design Gallery" in the underground parking Serletta. The gallery consists of 31 illuminated showcases and is open 24 hours on 365 days of the year.

The first exhibition from December 18, 2004 till mid March 2005 is called "75 Jahre Marke St. Moritz. Plakate" and celebrates the 75th anniversary of the famous logo created by graphic designer Walter Herdeg in 1930, on the initiative of his friend Walter Amstutz who was St. Moritz's publicity manager (Kurdirektor) at that time.

Amstutz and Herdeg are well know to graphic designers as the authors of "Who's Who in Graphic Art", and so is the curator of the first exhibition, Karl Wobmann, the longtime head of the poster collection of the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Zuerich. The Gallery is sponsored by Credit Suisse. Emile Cardinaux designed the poster on the cover of the catalogue in 1917.

Sergei Voichenko 1955 - 2004

I am sorry to hear that the belorussian poster designer Sergei Voichenko has died in Minsk (BY) on December 9, 2004, as I just learned from Andrei Logvin's Blog. Logvin calls him "one of the brightest characters of post-Soviet artistic space".

Voichenko was a partner, with Vladimir Tsesler, at Artdesignstudio in Minsk, and their web site shows a rich portfolio of advertising, social and cultural posters. The one at left, with the title "Made in New Russia", earned them an honorary mention at the 16. Warsaw Poster Biennial in 1998.

Thesis on mexican political posters by Jose Manuel Morelos

Jose Manuel Morelos, a graphic designer and researcher at the University of Veracruz in Xalapa, Mexico, showed me an inkjet version of his thesis entitled "30 anos de cartel politico en Mexico 1966 - 1996" which will be published in book form next year. It is a major scholarly work, with hundreds of illustrations. Morelos also won this year's "Carlos Lozano Award", given to most distinguished young mexican graphic designers at the 8th International Poster Biennial in Mexico 2004, and had a personal exhibition at the Instituto de Artes Plasticas in Xalapa.

His friends tease him by calling him Jose Maria Morelos, as the famous mexican patriot and general of the independence war. To make things clear about his identy, he designed a poster pointing out that "Jose Ma. Morelos" is an "Investigador: pubico y privado", which you find by following the link to the winner's page above.

The end of a famous poster competition in Switzerland

The yearly swiss poster competition "Plakat des Jahres" that was started in 1941 has come to an end, as I found out by chance in an official press communication from the "Bundesamt fuer Kultur" (a section of the Swiss Federal Departement of Home Affairs) Nach 63 Jahren Ende des Wettbewerbs "Plakat des Jahres" (bis 2001 "Schweizer Plakate des Jahres"), dated September 28, 2004.

The text puts the blame for the end of the traditional and prestigious event on a declining interest in the competition and it's results, particularly from the advertising industry.

At the same time, the swiss graphic designers Melk Imboden, Stephan Bundi and Paula Troxler win a whopping 25% of all prizes in an international poster competition in Korea where 2112 posters from 44 countries were received (see the blog item below), so I see some contradiction in the valuation of swiss poster design, as seen from inside and outside of the country.

Henry Steiner awarded honorary doctorate

Posters of the "4. Block" Triennial and Chernobyl photos in Switzerland

Oleg Veklenko, the director of the International Poster Triennials "4. Block" in Kharkov, Ukraine, will open an exhibition in Basel, Switzerland, of selected posters from the 2003 Triennial. He will also show photographs that he took at Chernobyl during his work as liquidator a few days and weeks after the accident on April 24, 1986.

Oleg Veklenko
"Remember 4th Block!" Documentary photography. Honored artist of the Ukraine, Professor of Kharkov Academy of Design and Arts Oleg Veklenko arrived in Chernobyl on April, 29th, 1989. Just like many other Ukrainian reserve officers, he was mobilized. For a few days he didn't get to Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and was impatient to get to see the contaminated ruins of 4th block. Then for two months 4th block became his everyday reality. Dozens of young men, pulled out of their usual life and dressed in military uniform had to do totally unheroic mundane jobs - digging soil, loading containers, washing the machines of the plant with soap powder. Occasional pictures that Oleg took almost absent-mindedly have become a priceless document and a memory of those who are gone now. Documentary photographs printed from scratched negatives, some spoilt by radiation, were one of the corner-stones that 4th Block Eco Poster and Graphics Triennial began with in 1991.

Sad news about David Consuegra

David Consuegra, jury member from Colombia at the 8. Bienial Internacional de Cartel en Mexico and invited speaker at the Festival Internacional del Diseno y las Artes in Xalapa, died of a heart attack at the age of 65 in his hotel in Mexico City in the night of October 30, 2004, after happily celebrating the conclusion of the festival with his friends.

I met David a few days ago at the World Trade Tower revolving restaurant in Mexico City, and we had an evening of intensive discussion on typography, on posters, on the problem of content and form and how, or if, both should be in some agreement in posters, if posters should have a meaning or message, if all designers of "Tosca" posters at the Biennial had seen the play and also understood it, if a font of a text should match the content of the text, what to do about the default font in a browser on which a web designer has no control, and so on. We both completely forgot to look at the splendid view of Mexico DF at night.

Later, in Xalapa, Maestro Consuegra presented an overview of his book on "American type and type designers" in which his immense and thorough knowledge of the history of typography is preserved.

I learned of David's death in an unexpected way:
On November 1, the "Dia de los Muertos" is a big fiesta in Mexico. Many families make a small altar in their home, richly decorated with flowers, with portraits of family members or friends who have died, with their favorite food and drink and cigarettes or books. In Mexico, All Saints Day is a happy celebration, with smiling skulls made from sugar or chocolate, skeletons dressed up as distinguished ladies, parties with music at the cemeteries and so on. It was rather a shock for me when Lourdes and Luis Almeida showed me their altar and mentioned that they also have a picture of David, the page from the Bienial catalogue.

"All of us must die" said the smiling La Catrina on the stage of the Teatro Estado in Xalapa on the night after David's death, and I know this is no comfort for David Consuegra's family, and especially his wife who was with him in Mexico. But what a way to go for David, what a time, what a place ...

Marc Choko, the Director of Design at the University of Quebec in Montreal just sent me the book he has written together with David L. Jones on the posters of the Canadian Pacific, published by Firefly Books.

The Canadian Pacific Railway Company, which also had ships and airplanes, is a national institution in Canada and published, over the years from 1883 to the 1970's more than 2500 posters. The authors have succeded to present this material not only as a beautiful travel poster book, but also an interesting illustration of canadian history.

Viktor Rutz, a well known swiss poster designer, was wildly successful as a young man already, having created about 200 posters before he was 35. After World War 2, he suddenly became aware of the horrors of the concentration camps, and painted another version of a poster that he had designed for a cheese company in 1942. He turned away from a lucrative career in advertising and started to paint, changed his name to Victor Ruzo and traveled the world. Last year, at 91, he opened an exhibition of his paintings at the Russian State Museum in St. Petersburg, accompanied by his wife Ria. The double page at left is from the book and catalogue of that exhibition.

Alexander Faldin - faster, higher, stronger

Alexander Faldin was quite surprised when he saw a recent magazine cover from the Guardian, as it looked quite similar to a poster that he had designed long ago. So were the editors of KAK magazine, who diplomatically suggest that miracles do sometimes happen, and two designers do sometimes have the same idea independently, but also add "But Faldin we love and value". Faldin's poster was a front page poster on the Poster Page in February 2002, so anyway he is faster than the Guardian, his picture has a higher quality, and is much stronger than their cover, or in latin "citius... altius... fortius".

New gallery for poster exhibitions in The Hague (NL)

A new poster gallery, or rather exhibition space, will open on October 16, 2004, in an underground passage in The Hague, Netherlands: Affiche Galerij in the Souterrain. The idea is to have about six exhibitions per year, open every day, from very early in the morning until very late at night, that will be seen by thousands of people!

Janel Bragg wins first prize in poster contest

Just to remind you that there is more to posters than winning gold medals at biennials, or selling Alphonse Muchas for 50'000 $, not that there is anything wrong with that.

Janel Bragg lives on Guemes Island, a tiny island in the Pacific, about 80 km south of Vancouver (CA), and just won the first prize in the annual poster contest of the North Sound Mental Health Administration. The contest is organized to "generate awareness of mental health issues, and to combat the stigma attached to mental illness".

I have long noticed that designing a poster is a way to deal with all kinds of personal problems, and to voice them. For example to deal with fear and anger, from 9/11 to SARS to the war in Iraq to AIDS, racism, and so on. Winning a price or changing the world is not so important in that context, although of course my congratulations go to Janel Bragg and the other participants, and I hope they will keep making more posters.

Moscow and the world is awaiting the winners of the Golden Bee International Poster Biennial, which Sergei Serov, the founding father of the Golden Bee, will announce tomorrow. He already has marked the corresponding pages in his copy of the catalogue, obviously inspired by El Lisitskii's famous book of Maiakovskii poems, Dlia golosa ("for reading out loud").

Irina Ostromenskaia and Volodimir Veshtak is an extraordinary couple, both poster designers and artists, and they run a poster shop and gallery where you would least expect it : In downtown Kyiv, Ukraine, at the former Dom Kudoshnikov on Artema Street. They frequently organize international poster exhibitions, and when I visited them a year ago, they were just dismantling one, as you can see in the pictures below, with posters from Iurii Surkov (RU), Alejandro Magallanes (MX), Joao Machado (PT), Fang Chen (CN) and more. Kari Piippo (FI) had a show earlier this year, and tonight, they open an exhibition of Peter Pocs from Hungary. Cities like New York or Paris could learn a lot from them, call +380-44-212 0547.

Comet research pioneer Whipple dies

Fred Whipple, a famous american astronomer, has died last Monday, August 30, 2004, in Cambridge MA at the age of 97. He predicted the composition of comets and invented a device in 1946, long before space flight, that would protect satellites from the impact of meteors. The thin metal foil is still in use today and is known as "Whipple shield". Six comets and an astronomy institute are also named after him.

In 1966, he was invited to visit Moscow for a scientific exchange project, a unique chance as it was not so easy to travel behind the Iron Curtain for an American during the Cold War. While he met his fellow astronomers, his wife Babette went looking for posters. Much later, in 1999, she found two of them again in a cupboard, and contacted me, as she had noticed the Poster Page on the internet, even before Google. I was quite impressed to receive email from a lady in her eighties, and even more so when she decided to donate the posters to my collection, and I feel very honoured to count Babette and Fred Whipple among the first supporters of the Poster Page:

About 130'000 posters are offered for sale each day on the american auction site www.ebay.com, and another 15'000 at the german branch www.ebay.de, and 2400 on www.ebay.fr . If I am starting to push some of these auctions on Poster Page or Poster Blog, I will end up in a snake pit of requests from everybody. But I make an exception for the current auction of 39 original posters from the estate of Hans Hofmann (1906 - 1973), a well known austrian designer, because austrian vintage posters do not appear on the market very often, and also because of the exceptionally high quality of the reproductions on these auction pages.
